V-EDU-45: Virtual Learning: Inclusive Policies and Practices that Support All Learners

Overview

Learn about promising practices and areas of growth for addressing the needs of students with disabilities in fully virtual and hybrid online educational settings. Review what technology systems are used in these settings, the type of curriculum provided, and how the virtual schools support students with disabilities. Understand state and district policies related to students with disabilities, educational outcomes of these students, and the roles of parents and teachers in K-12 virtual education.

Content Disclosure: This presentation will focus exclusively on CITES and will not include information on other similar projects.

CAST, Project Director

Biography

Christine Fox, MS, Senior Technical Assistance Specialist, CAST, has been Project Director of CAST's CITES project since the start of 2022. Prior to joining CAST, Christine was the Senior Director of External Relations for the Consortium for School Networking (CoSN) where she was responsible for corporate partnerships, professional advancement programs, and supported federal advocacy efforts regarding digital equity and cybersecurity. Prior to her role at CoSN, she served as the Deputy Executive Director, for the State Educational Technology Directors Association (SETDA) where she collaborated with the Executive Director in charting the strategic direction of the organization and facilitated the members' professional learning opportunities including two annual, national conferences, an online community of practice, committees and monthly webinars. Her work also included the facilitation of working groups to support the previous two National Educational Technology Plans. In addition, she managed product development from conception to publication including Navigating the Digital Shift reports 2015-2019, the Broadband Imperative Report Series, and Guide to Quality Instructional Materials.

Tara Courchaine, EdD

CAST, Chief Research and Development Officer

Biography

Tara Courchaine, Ed.D., is currently CAST's Chief Research & Development Officer. At CAST, she supports our federally funded research and technical assistance projects. Across CAST, she is helping to inform the research to practice loop and ensure UDL and accessibility are included together to improve learner outcomes. Before joining CAST, Dr. Courchaine was an Education Program Specialist in the Office of the Director in the Office of Special Education Programs (OSEP) at the U.S. Department of Education, supporting work in both the Research to Practice and Monitoring and State Improvement Program Divisions. Her portfolio areas included technology and accessibility, English language learners with and without disabilities, disproportionate representation in special education, and multi-tiered systems of support. She worked with State Professional Development Projects (SPDGs), Model Demonstration Grants and grants focused on accessibility to help SEAs, LEAs and schools meet IDEA 2004 requirements to provide accessible instructional materials, in a timely manner, to eligible students.
