V-TWA-04: It's a Tool, Not a Toy

Overview

Our students need the skills to seamlessly implement AT solutions on-the-job. Teachers and parents of teenagers feel like they are glued to their phones 24-7. How do we take this mainstream technology that often feels like a toy and use it as a tool for successful integration into the workplace? In this session, we will explore apps, tools, and features of smartphones that can be used to support successful employment for students of varied levels of ability.

Learning Objectives

  1. Define three or more job readiness skills requiring explicit instruction at the secondary level that will serve as a foundation for successful employment.
  2. Identify at least one benefit employers realize when they employ students and/or adults with a disability.
  3. Discuss two to five basic smartphone functions/apps/tools that can support successful integration into the workplace.

Biography

Out-of-the box. Passionate. Chaos Coordinator. All of the above. Jennifer Wilson graduated from the University of Southern California with a B.A. in Theater. Rather than star in movies, she completed her teaching certification and a M.Ed. in Special Education from California State University Bakersfield. 20+ years in the classroom have taken her from California, to Oregon, to Texas and now to Wyoming. Although she has taught at all grade levels, her specialty is successful student transition from high school to postsecondary education and work. Currently, she teaches at the alternative high school in Jackson with students that struggle from trauma and past negative academic experiences. As the parent of a son with Dyslexia, she has experienced first-hand the impact services such as Vocational Rehabilitation, Assistive Technology, and Transition Planning have had on molding him into a successful young adult. As a teacher, she implements these same techniques with her students. She loves to share with teachers and practitioners so that they are equipped with the tools necessary to build success in their own students.
