V-ATPAP-24: Start to Be Smart: How to Plan a Smart Home Setup

Overview

Goals include educating caregivers, therapists and practitioners on the basics involved in using readily available smart home products to give individuals increased safety and independence. Focus is on clients getting assistance when needed and accessing their environment with their voice, from smart phones or AAC/SGD. Secondary focus will be on environmental control; including lights, surveillance, doors, smart locks and temperature regulation. Tips for selecting devices based on cognitive and physical ability will also be shared. Participants will leave with a foundation to implement the technology, decreasing the intimidation from how simple these systems can be to set up and manage.

Learning Objectives

  1. Identify three unique ways a patient can alert caregivers within a home setting.
  2. Develop a basic smart home set up to be shared by caregivers and patients that includes at least four solutions to increase independence and safety.
  3. Define five concerns when choosing smart home equipment to be used by people with compromised physical or cognitive abilities.
