V-EDU-06: App Smackdown!

Overview

Sharing is everything right? Wouldn't it be nice if a group of people could just sit down and share different apps that can be used on iOS, Android or Chrome? If you answered 'yes,' then this session is for you! Join us for this year's edition of the App Smackdown. In this session, participants will share with each other different apps that can be used with and/or by individuals with disabilities. This is a session for practitioners led by practitioners. Please no vendors! Come join us for a fast-paced and exciting experience for sharing your knowledge and learning with others. Bring your devices with you to share because this session is all about YOU!! The hour flies by so come ready to learn. The facilitators will compile a list of shared tools for future reference.

Brian Wojcik

Assistive Technology Partnership, NE ATP Education Program Supervisor

Biography

Brian Wojcik currently works as the Education Program Supervisor for the Nebraska Assistive Technology Partnership within the Nebraska Department of Education. He has worked previously as Special Education Faculty at the University of Nebraska at Kearney and as the Coordinator of the Special Education Assistive Technology (SEAT) Center at Illinois State University. As an educator, Brian has been integrating technology to meet the needs of students with diverse learning needs for well over three decades. In his current position, Brian works to help educators build capacity for delivering quality AT services within Nebraska.

Biography

Christopher R. Bugaj, MA CCC-SLP is a founding member of the Assistive Technology Team for Loudoun County Public Schools. Chris co-hosts the Talking With Tech podcast featuring interviews and conversations about Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) and has hosted The A.T.TIPSCAST; a multi-award winning podcast featuring strategies to design educational experiences. Chris is the author of The New Assistive Tech: Make Learning Awesome For All, published by the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE). Chris is the co-author of Inclusive Learning 365: EdTech Strategies for Every Day of the Year and The Practical (and Fun) Guide to Assistive Technology in Public Schools both of which are also published by ISTE. Chris co-authored two chapters for a book published by Brookes Publishing titled Technology Tools for Students with Autism. Chris co-produces and co-authors the popular Night Light Stories podcast which features original stories for children of all ages. Chris has presented over 550 live or digital sessions at local, regional, state, national and international events, including TEDx.

Elisa Wern

Alachua County Public Schools, Occupational Therapist and Local Assistive Technology Specialist

Biography

Elisa Wern is an Occupational Therapist, with a Master’s degree in Special Education, and RESNA Certified Assistive Technology Professional (ATP) with over 20 years of experience in pediatric therapy. She presents at a variety of state and national conferences including regional trainings, CEC, PATINS A2E, ATIA, OTAP/ECHO TIES Project, AOTA, CATE, and AAC in the Cloud. She receives a salary as the Local Assistive Technology Specialist for Alachua County Schools in Gainesville, Florida, where she coordinates AT services for the district, and serves as the Lead Occupational Therapist. In her spare work time she has a private practice, AT & OT Consulting and Coaching, supporting students and families primarily through teletherapy evaluations, consultations, and interventions. Through this practice she receives payment for therapy and assistive technology services as well as honorariums for some presentations. She also volunteers for AT Makers coordinating the Intellikeys Project. She is the co-author of a chapter with Sarah Gregory, in the recently published, Fundamentals of AAC: A Case-Based Approach to Enhancing Communication, for which they receive no compensation. She shares ideas and resources on Twitter @wernedat.

Mike is a RESNA Certified Assistive Technology Professional and the 2017 ISTE Inclusive Learning Network Outstanding Educator. Mike is a nationally and internationally recognized presenter providing practical training to professionals interested in assistive and inclusive technology. In addition, Mike is an adjunct professor at Ramapo College of New Jersey (NJ) teaching Masters level educators in Assistive Technology and Universal Design for Learning. Mike is the Director of the Richard West Assistive Technology Advocacy Center and serves on both the CAST Accessible Educational Materials and Center on Inclusive Technology and Education Systems (CITES) Advisory Boards. Mike is also the founder of EdcampAccess NJ and co-moderator of the weekly #ATchat Twitter chat.
