V-AAC-30: It's a Beautiful Day in the GLP Neighborhood

Overview

It has long been established that there are two methods of language processing - analytic language processing and gestalt language processing (GLP) (Peters, 1983; Prizant,1983). Marge Blanc, MA, CCC-SLP, described gestalt language development for speaking learners in her Natural Language Acquisition framework (Blanc, 2012). The implications of gestalt language processing for AAC users is a relatively new topic of conversation within the field. This presentation will provide an update on what we've learned about AAC, GLP, and clinical practice thus far. Case studies, a survey of practicing SLPs, and GLP myths will be explored. Resources will be provided.

Learning Objectives

  1. Describe three differences between gestalt language processing and analytic language processing.
  2. Identify three myths of gestalt language processing and AAC.
