V-AAC-26: How SSVCs Are Used By Individuals Who Use AAC

Overview

Smart Speakers with Voice Control (SSVCs), a universal designed technology, promotes social inclusion for people with disabilities. The Generalization phase of a mixed-method dissertation study on the impact of smart home technology on the independence of individuals who use AAC will be reported. Recap of the InViSTA Program, based in Ohio, will be described, specifically basic, moderate, and advanced voice commands for SSVCs, time data for teaching sessions, and Alexa Voice History Logs (benefits/challenges as data collection tool). Audio/video recordings examples will be shown to enhance understanding of using SSVCs and smart home technology to promote social inclusion. How individuals who use AAC are using SSVCs and smart home technology will be discussed.

Content Disclosure: This session will cover findings from The InVISTA  (Independence Via Smart Technology Activation) Program in the use of Smart Home Technology on the independence of individuals who use AAC. The study included, but was not limited to products from Amazon, Philips Hue, Tan Tan smart sockets and adapters from other providers. The presenters do not have any financial relationships with the products used in this study.

Biography

Christina Lynn Corso, PhD, CCC-SLP, is a speech language pathologist at Encompass Health - Parkersburg and formerly with Ohio University. Her research interests include increasing independence through technology in adolescents and young adults who have severe and complex disabilities. She also is interested in conducting research that looks at AAC interfaces that support language development for adolescents and young adults who have severe and complex disabilities with complex communication needs.
