Mary Jane Frick, OTR/L, ATP, CDP

Good Shepherd Rehabilitation Network-Long Term Care Division, Occupational Therapy Program Coordinator

Biography

MaryJane Frick OTR/L, ATP, CDP is an Occupational Therapist additionally certified as an Assistive Technology Professional and Dementia Practitioner. She has over thirty years of experience as an Occupational Therapist. She began her career working as a staff therapist at Good Shepherd Rehabilitation Network in the Long Term Care Division in 1988. There she worked with a residential population that was highly involved physically with varying levels of cognitive as well as visual deficits. It was here that she began her journey specializing in assistive technology in order to find ways for these individuals to be as independent as possible maximizing their quality of life overall. She became certified as an Assistive Technology Professional through the Rehabilitation Engineering and Assistive Technology Society of North America RESNA in 1999. Seeing the difference that assistive technology brought to so many of the residents with whom she worked, she decided to share this message and began publishing and providing workshops, in-services and presenting at conferences at the local and national level in regard to the use of assistive technologies in order to enhance the lives for people who are differently abled. She began teaching assistive technology to students at the very start of this journey but in 2012 she began teaching at the international level to Bio-Engineering students as to the benefits of these technologies. They then shared what they had learned to varying countries throughout Central and South America. MaryJane specializes in both adaptive computer technologies and environmental adaptations. In 2017 MaryJane was then confronted with more and more problems dealing with residents who were now aging and experiencing dementia. As this population had aged so was the need for further specialization so in 2017 MaryJane became certified as a Dementia Practitioner through The National Council of Certified Dementia Practitioner's. Adding this area of specialization allowed her to truly focus on the cognitive needs of this aging population. Trying to further reach as many people as possible MaryJane then co-published two courses: "Assistive Technology: Evolving Therapy to Address Aging" and "Assistive Technology and Dementia: Therapeutic Tools to Enhance the Lives of Clients with Dementia". These courses were both published through OTCourses.com. It has been MaryJane's life work to share the message of how the use of assistive technology can truly enhance the lives of all individuals who are differently abled. It is now with the development of this company that she hopes to continue to share this message and her expertise with those who have need. MaryJane lives with her husband on their farm in Coopersburg Pennsylvania. They have been blessed by three wonderful children and two grandchildren who gather at the farm frequently to share in its riches.
