AAC for the Non-SLP

Overview

As a piece of assistive technology, AAC is quite its own specialty. Matching a person successfully with a device involves understanding many factors such as their physical access, vision, hearing, language skills, and moreā€¦ Then comes the fun of teaching the device, or learning how to use it! It can all feel overwhelming and we don't all have the time to go take an AAC class. Come join Sayard and Beth for an updated session full of information about AAC including some tips, reasoning for "why", and a few laughs as we lead you through the world of AAC. (SLPs also welcome).

ASL interpreters and captioning will be available for the the live event.

  2. Identify one coding system used by the Fitzgerald Key.
  3. Describe four access methods for using AAC.
  4. Identify one key element of four mainstreamed communication programs.

BIOGRAPHY

Sayard is an SLP and assistive technology professional located in the Chicago suburbs. A graduate of UIUC with a B.A. in speech communications, she came to communication disorders as a second career starting in the SLPA program at College of DuPage, post baccalaureate work at Saint Xavier University, before achieving her M.S. from Illinois State University. Her journey as a speech pathologist has involved everything from SNF, to contract school work, working directly for a school district, and now working for a cooperative. In all of her settings she has learned more about AAC and assistive technology. This led to pursing her Assistive Technology Professional Certificate. She has presented at Closing the Gap, ATIA, ISHA, ISAAC, RESNA, Infinitec, the International Seating Symposium as well as for AbleNet and multiple state tech act programs.
Currently, Sayard is the assistive technology coordinator for Southwest Cooperative, as well as an adjunct instructor in the UIC assistive technology certificate program. She has presented nationally and internationally on topics of implementation, AAC, processes in assessment, and transition. She lives in Downers Grove (west of Chicago) with her husband and two children.

BIOGRAPHY

Beth Speaker-Christensen has worked as an SLP for over 25 years. She has experience working in skilled nursing facilities, hospitals, schools clinics and now has her own private practice. Beth is a member of ASHA, USSAAC (Chair of the Membership Committee), and RESNA (on the Professional Standards Board).
