Lightbulb Moments: Connecting Theory to Recreational Therapy Practice Within Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Settings (.1 CEUs)

For many recreational therapists, theories are something long ago discussed during coursework but rarely intentionally implemented within day-to-day practice. However, many practitioners may be utilizing theories within practice without even knowing it! This session aims to reeducate and reinvigorate recreational therapy practitioners on theory-based practice within practice, specifically within physical medicine and rehabilitation settings. Participants will review theory-based practice and benefits of use, explore relevant theories for recreational therapy practice—including self-efficacy theory, social role valorization, and selection, optimization, and compensation theory—and understand their use and application within the APIED process. Overall, this session will challenge practitioners to consider how they can intentionally implement theory within recreational therapy practice in physical medicine and rehabilitation settings to most effectively benefit clients.
