Passive and active natural ventilations systems, in
the right climate zone, can be an effective way to reduce mechanical cooling
costs in appropriate buildings. These systems have been introduced into
educational environments to reduce mechanical cooling and ventilation hours in
an effort to reduce building energy use.
While the design concept isn’t new, current construction
practices, components, and integration with the building automation system have
presented challenges to design & construction teams who aim for long term
successful operation of these systems.
The panel discussion will cover design intent, construction,
commissioning, and operation of the common components such as connected
dampers, operable windows, and mechanical ventilators while reviewing areas of
concern, failure, and solutions implemented on specific projects.
