9.13.17 | Commissioning of VRF and DOAS Systems

Variable Refrigerant Flow/Variable Refrigerant Volume (VRF/VRV) systems have been around for years, but installation and commissioning of these systems is rife with pitfalls and problems. Manufacturers have specific requirements for installation and operation and the system designer should identify system requirements such as cooling only, heating or cooling, or simultaneous heating and cooling. VRF/VRV systems can be purchased and installed by contractors without knowing system requirements and with little support from the product vendor. All of this can lead to systems not operating per the design intent or, worse, an installed system that can’t meet the design intent.

Understanding the basic system components, how they should be installed and how they should operate, is the start of any commissioning process. Will the system be required to heat and cool? Simultaneously or not? Is the system provided with a heat pump or with heat recovery? What specific components should be installed? What items should be reviewed during pre-functional checks, and what operational tests should be completed? How do these systems relate to a Dedicated Outside Air System (DOAS), and what should we look for during the commissioning process?

Find out more about proper installation and commissioning the VRF/VRV system to ensure a reliable means for cooling and/or heating a building.

Today’s presentation will be available to you under the resource tab after the completion of this webinar, along with a brief survey about this event. Please take a few minutes to respond to this survey as it will help us to better meet your training needs.

After completion of the survey you can download your certificate of completion. If additional participants wish to earn continuing education credits please make sure they sign the AIA form (located under the resources tab of the event) and email back to
sadams@bcxa.org. There is a $25 fee for each additional participant. As soon as payment has been made each individual will receive an access code to obtain their certificate for credits.
