LEVEL OF LEARNING: Introductory

Part 1 Workshop Description:

What to learn more about becoming a Disaster Mental Health Volunteer with the American Red Cross? This session will offers two of the four required pre-requisite courses to become a Service Associate Disaster Mental Health Volunteer with the American Red Cross. The courses are taught back-to-back in this session. Participants will receive a certificate for both courses that they can take back to their local chapter for credit when they sign up to volunteer.

Learning Objectives:
Disaster Cycle Services: An Overview – This 2 hour course is the first course in the Disaster Cycle Services Curriculum and is intended to provide an overview to volunteers on the Red Cross disaster mission and the cycle approach to disaster operations.

Upon completing this portion of the workshop, you will be able to:
1) Identify types of needs for people impacted by a disaster.
2) List ways a community can be affected by a disaster.
3) Describe how Disaster Cycle Services fulfills the American Red Cross
mission.
4) Describe the Disaster Cycle Services model and the concept of whole cycle
operations.
5) Identify actions the American Red Cross takes to help individuals,
families and communities prepare for emergencies.
6) Describe the services the American Red Cross provides to people and
communities during the respond process.
7) Describe actions the American Red Cross takes to help clients and
communities recover from disasters.
8) Identify ways the American Red Cross collaborates with community
partners during disaster responses.
9) Describe the importance of volunteers to support the three core and five
mission-enabling Areas.
10) Describe opportunities for volunteers to engage with Disaster Cycle
Services.
11) Identify the steps to volunteer with the American Red Cross.

Part 2

Part 2 Workshop Description:

Disaster Mental Health Introduction – This one hour course provides an overview of the mission of Disaster Mental Health in the American Red Cross.
Upon completion of this portion of the workshop, you will be able to:
1) Recognize the Disaster Mental Health mission and how it fits into the array of Red Cross services provided by chapters and on disaster relief operations.
2) Recognize the difference between services provided as a Disaster Mental Health worker and as a mental health professional.
3) Identify the next steps for becoming a Disaster Mental Health volunteer.
