Psychopharmacology and Co-Occurring Disorders

Presented by Dr. Donna Ehlers 6 CE Hours

Workshop Description:
The workshop will be a dynamic mix of didactic learning, interactive opportunities, and real client presentations. Part I will include a comprehensive overview of the neuroscience and practical application of psychopharmacology. Basic biochemistry, neural circuits,neuroanatomy will be discussed in detail especially in relationship to psychotropic medication. The most widely prescribed medications will be explored regarding doses, risk/benefit profiles, side effect profiles, and specific targets of symptom management. Medical monitoring of medication including laboratory follow up will be addressed.
Part II of the workshop will focus on practical application especially in terms of Co-Occurring Disorders. We will review the benefits of an integrative approach to care incorporating our discussions of the role of psychotropic medication in holistic healing.
Finally we will embrace the importance of healing on all levels of body, mind and spirit to offer help to these complicated and challenging disorders.

Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of this workshop, participates will be able to:

Discuss underlying biochemistry, neurotransmitters and neural circuits involved in symptom Presentations;
  1. Define the monoamine hypothesis of depression and the use of specific antidepressants to target specific symptomatology and the role of portfolios in medication regimen;
  2. Identify the role of various mood stabilizers especially whether they help in the manic or depressed phases of mood disorders;
