Recording Only: Medicare and Medicaid Knowledge Series - Part One: Payer Sources, Payment Systems, and Supervision Policies

Medicare is a federal government healthcare program managed by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). The program provides national standards for healthcare benefits, establishes the minimum requirements for clinical supervision and documentation, and significantly influences coding and payment policies that also affect Medicaid and commercial payers. Participants will receive a brief summary on the creation of the Medicare and Medicaid programs.

The heart of this lecture defines and differentiates Medicare Parts A, B, & C, Medicaid, Medicaid Advantage, and commercial insurance carriers in terms of payer sources, payment systems, clinical supervision requirements, and payment for telepractice services. Clinical scenarios will be presented to enhance understanding and application of information.

  • Explain the difference between a prospective payment system and fee-for-service.
