Moving Towards Cultural Humility in CSD Programs

The year 2020 was one of reckoning for many. We have collectively been faced with a double pandemic – COVID-19 and longstanding systemic racism. While many may think the current sociopolitical climate does not impact our field, it only highlighted the inequities in our beloved profession. Many of our clients, their families, our students, as well as faculty and staff have been impacted by these looming issues. More specifically, the harms (both physical and psychological) that have been inflicted due to racist acts have made departments across the country recently publish statements addressing equity, diversity, and inclusion in Communication Science and Disorder (CSD) training programs. From the outside looking in, many of these statements were performative in nature. It is very challenging to dismantle the racist systems that have been present in higher education since its inception and these changes will not happen overnight or over the course of one academic year. Therefore, the purpose of this presentation is to move beyond performative acts. It is time to face the music. Faculty, staff, and administrators will be provided with actionable, initial steps to increase cultural humility in CSD programs.

Learning Objectives

• Compare and contrast cultural competency and cultural humility.
• Identify challenges that may be experienced by students from underrepresented groups in CSD programs.
• Develop an action plan for increasing cultural humility in one or more of the following areas: student recruitment, faculty and staff recruitment, curriculum and pedagogy, and research opportunities.

Lakeisha Johnson, PhD, CCC-SLP
Florida State University
Dr. Lakeisha Johnson is an Assistant Professor in the Communication Science and Disorders program at Florida State University and an ASHA-certified speech-language pathologist. She is also the director of The Village, the community outreach and engagement division of the Florida Center for Reading Research. Dr. Johnson's primary research interests include language, literacy, dialect, and executive functioning in African American children and other at-risk populations. It is her mission to investigate the aforementioned areas while building and strengthening research-practice partnerships between the university and the local community to ensure children from vulnerable populations learn to read. Additionally, Dr. Johnson runs a website, Maya's Book Nook, to promote language and literacy foundations through diverse children's books.
