Description

Workplace violence refers to any act or threat of physical violence, harassment, intimidation, or other threatening disruptive behavior that occurs at the worksite. Data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics and the National Crime Victimization Survey reveal that workplace violence is a significant threat to those in the healthcare industry .

In light of recent tragic events involving workplace violence, the Cooperative of American Physicians, Inc. (CAP) wants to ensure that our member practices are prepared. CAP’s complimentary webinar, How Safe Are You? Responding to the Challenge of Workplace, Violence discussed the following topics:

  • Workplace violence in the medical practice
  • Recognizing the warning signs of workplace violence
  • The importance of educating staff
  • Exploring effective strategies to prevent violent incidents
  • Developing a survival mindset, including the Run, Hide, Fight protocol

  • Josef Levy, President, Embassy Consulting Services, LLC

    Josef Levy was employed by the City of Long Beach and was a Commander with the Long Beach Police Department. During his 28-year career, he worked assignments in patrol, gangs, narcotics, internal affairs, hostage negotiations, and media relations where he served as the Department Spokesperson. As a law enforcement officer, he handled and successfully managed hundreds of incidents, including active shooters, barricaded suspects, and countless high risk tactical incidents.

    Mr. Levy is now President of his firm, Embassy Consulting Services, LLC and continues to utilize his skills, experience, and passion to educate others on the importance of building and maintaining safe, respectful, and inclusive communities. He has received a number of prestigious awards and has been recognized at the Congressional level.

    Mr. Levy also designs and delivers a variety of quality training programs and has conducted workshops for thousands of law enforcement and educator professionals throughout California. He also is a sought-after speaker who travels around the country teaching on the State and Federal level as well as the International level, training delegations from France, Germany, Israel, Algiers, and Russia.

    Mr. Levy is a cancer survivor and the president and cofounder of the National Law Enforcement Cancer Support Foundation.

  • Susan Jones, CPHRM, CAP Senior Risk Management & Patient Safety Specialist

    Susan Jones is a Senior Risk Management & Patient Safety Specialist at the Cooperative of American Physicians, Inc. A Certified Professional in Healthcare Risk Management, Ms. Jones has worked in the healthcare field for 20 years as a risk management and patient safety specialist, researcher, and educator. She has garnered extensive experience as a clinical risk manager for hospitals and trauma centers, and also managed a 12-physician outpatient pediatric and adolescent practice.

    In 2006, Ms. Jones became a certified Crisis Prevention Institute trainer and implemented the Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) “Non-Violent Crisis Intervention” training program© with her team hospital-wide. From 2006-2007, the team conducted over 100 classes and trained over 1,450 hospital staff members. She was an active CPI instructor from 2006-2009.

    Ms. Jones earned her bachelor’s degree from Temple University in Philadelphia and obtained her nursing license in 1997. She also holds a certificate in Paralegal Studies from the Harris School of Business, and obtained her Six Sigma training in 2010. Ms. Jones is a member of the American Society of Healthcare Risk Management.
