In June 2019 the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention published provisional estimates of 32,159 deaths in 2018 from synthetic opioids, a slight decline from 2017. Most of those will be from illicit fentanyl and analogues (not prescription opioids) as the opioid epidemic continues to evolve.
