Climate Risk in Practice: Translating Climate Risk into Operational Decisions

Thank you

This live web event has ended. Thank you for attending.

Description

This CAS session assembles industry experts to explore how shifting climate exposures redefine insurance operations. Moving beyond theoretical science, the panel offers a practical framework for integrating physical hazard volatility, evolving catastrophe risk, and transition liabilities directly into core management functions. Participants will explore how intensifying secondary perils manifest under a changing climate, how traditional underwriting and pricing strategies must evolve to absorb this volatility within regulatory boundaries, and how to ultimately leverage alternative capacity and non-traditional risk-transfer tools to stabilize portfolios as market conditions fluctuate.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Leverage Catastrophe Models & Layered Intelligence: Utilize catastrophe models as the baseline framework to quantify complex exposures; evaluate how modelers integrate short-term cyclical drivers (like ENSO) and long-term climate pathways, and identify additional data to supplement models as hazards evolve.
  2. Adapt Primary Pricing, Underwriting & Reserving Strategies: Integrate climate data into primary actuarial frameworks and risk selection processes within traditional boundaries, while structuring verifiable guidelines that account for localized risk mitigation and credit structures.
  3. Optimize Capital Structure & Navigate Portfolio Tail Risks: Deploy traditional reinsurance alongside non-traditional risk transfer mechanisms (such as parametric insurance and Cat Bonds), navigate placement capacity shortages, and manage emerging casualty and D&O litigation liabilities arising from corporate climate exposures.
