The excess casualty line of business is at the epicenter of key trends impacting the industry, including social inflation, market hardening, and delays in the legal and claims process due to Covid 19. This multidisciplinary panel will discuss and assess the impact of those trends. It will also provide updates on litigation trends and exposures relevant to reserving actuaries.

This panel discussion is a repeat from the session held at the Seminar on Reinsurance in June 2022. It will not include slides.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Update on excess casualty market conditions.
  2. Discussion of the impact of social inflation on this major line of business.
  3. Review of large claims and trends impacting reserving.
  4. Discuss key areas of litigation, such as PFAS, Opioids, and the public nuisance cause of action.

CAS Continuing Education Policy
The CAS Continuing Education Policy applies to all ACAS and FCAS members who provide Actuarial Services. Actuarial Services are defined in the CAS Code of Professional Conduct as “professional services provided to a Principal by an individual acting in the capacity of an actuary. Such services include the rendering of advice, recommendations, findings or opinions based upon actuarial considerations.” Members who are or could be subject to the continuing education requirements of a national actuarial organization can meet the requirements of the CAS Continuing Education Policy by satisfying the continuing education requirements established by a national actuarial organization recognized by the Policy. For further information regarding the CAS Continuing Education Policy please visit the CAS web site.

CAS Webinars may qualify for up to 1.8* CE Credits for CAS members.
Participants should claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity. CAS members earn 1 CE Credit per 50 minutes of educational session time, not to include breaks and/or lunch. *The amount of CE credit that can be earned for participating in this activity must be assessed by the individual attendee.   • Jeffrey Dollinger

    Jeff Dollinger is the Chief Non-Life Reserving Actuary for PartnerRe. Before joining PartnerRe, Jeff headed reserving at Sompo International and prior to that was their chief reinsurance pricing actuary. Before joining Sompo, Jeff served in a variety of reinsurance pricing, underwriting, and reserving roles. Jeff is a Fellow of the Casualty Actuarial Society, a member of the American Academy of Actuaries, and graduate of Cornell University.

  • Timothy McCarthy

    Tim McCarthy is Senior Actuarial Director of Commercial Liability in ISO's Commercial Lines Actuarial Products Division, leading ISO’s actuarial product development and enhancements for the Commercial General Liability and Commercial Excess/Umbrella lines of business. Mr. McCarthy has over 25 years of experience in the industry encompassing line of business loss cost development, actuarial research and product development. He is an Associate of the Casualty Actuarial Society (CAS) and a member of the American Academy of Actuaries (AAA).

  • Jane Mandigo

    Jane is a Senior Vice President with the Swiss Re P&C Business Management Claims- Americas division, holding the title of Senior Claims Expert. In her role, she consults on issues relating to reinsurance coverage and emerging topical risk trends for Swiss Re cedents. Prior to her Senior Claims Expert position, Jane was Chief Product Underwriter for primary professional liability lines of business. She also handled complex professional liability claims across various lines for many years.

    Before joining Swiss Re, Jane practiced with the insurance defense group at the Kansas City law firm of Shughart, Thomson & Kilroy. Jane served a two-year term as a federal judicial clerk in the United States District Court for the Western District of Missouri, Southern Division, for the Honorable Russell G. Clark.
    She is a member of the Missouri Bar and graduated from the University of Missouri, Columbia School of Law where she held positions on the Missouri Law Review and Order of the Coif. Jane graduated Summa Cum Laude from Drury College with a degree in English.

  • Christopher Steinbach

    Chris Steinbach is the Head of Pricing & Analytics for North America at Sompo International where he is responsible for leading the strategy and analytics for improving pricing and profitability. Before joining Sompo, Chris worked at AIG in a variety of pricing leadership roles including Chief Pricing Actuary for Global Marine & Energy, Chief Pricing Actuary for Global Specialty Lines, and Head of Pricing for Global Financial Lines. Chris has also held the positions of Group Chief Actuary at The Navigators and Head of Pricing for Specialty Lines at Swiss Re America. He is a Fellow of the Casualty Actuarial Society and a member of the American Academy of Actuaries.
