Climate change affects actuaries' work through modeling, risk identification, and regulation. This presentation will help participants recognize and respond to how that work may create professionalism obligations.

Learning Objective:

  1. Be able to recognize touch points between professionalism and various Climate Risk topics that affect actuaries' work.

  • Kris DeFrain

    Kris DeFrain is the Director of the Research and Actuarial Services at the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC). She supports state regulators working on NAIC committee groups including the Casualty Actuarial and Statistical Task Force and the Third-Party Data and Models Task Force. She is currently assigned the role to build a team to conduct NAIC technical reviews of insurance company predictive models for state departments of insurance

  • Howard Kunst

    Howard began his actuarial career at a Wisconsin based insurance company in 1984. After holding a full range of actuarial roles with increasing responsibilities across multiple companies, Howard joined CoreLogic as Chief Actuary in June 2012. As part of the Science and Analytics team, Howard provides a variety of analytic services to clients, as well as providing thought leadership and Industry insight within CoreLogic’s Product Development, Sales, Science and Analytic teams.
    Howard is a Fellow of the Casualty Actuarial Society, a member of the American Academy of Actuaries, a member of the International Society of Catastrophe Managers (ISCM) and a Certified Catastrophe Risk Management Professional (CCRMP). Howard is also a member of the Insurance Regulatory Examiners Society (IRES) and the Association of Insurance Compliance Professionals (AICP). He is an active member of multiple committees and working groups across the many organizations where he is a member.

  • Todd Hess

    Todd Hess, FCAS and MAAA, is Head of Transactions and Referrals in the Risk Management department of Swiss Re. Todd has held a wide variety of actuarial, underwriting, and executive roles. In his current role he offers risk management advice on the company's largest P&C reinsurance deal prospects. Todd's three children all have climate-change related jobs. Todd is a member of the CAS Professionalism Education Working Group
