ASMD Webcast

Activity Overview

Although the recent availability of the novel enzyme replacement therapy (ERT) olipudase alfa has improved the outlook for patients with acid sphingomyelinase deficiency (ASMD), clinical outcomes remain poor as many patients go undiagnosed until presenting to hepatology or gastroenterology clinics with disease complications. This accredited continuing medical education symposium will use a case-based approach to provide hepatologists, gastroenterologists, and other healthcare providers with effective strategies to improve ASMD recognition, differential diagnosis, and management, including the use of novel ERT and supportive care measures as appropriate.

Target Audience
This initiative is intended for pediatric gastroenterologists, pediatric and adult hepatologists, transplant surgeons, pediatric and adult nutritionists/dieticians, intensivists/intensive care unit/critical care clinicians, nurses, and other HCPs who may be involved in the diagnosis and management of ASMD.

Agenda

  • Overview
  • A Case of Missed Opportunity for Diagnosis
  • ASMD in the Gastroenterology and Hepatology Setting
  • Preventing Progression in ASMD: The Era of Enzyme Replacement Therapy
  • Suspecting and Confirming ASMD: Symptom Recognition and Differential Diagnosis
  • Clinical Case Challenge: Addressing Missed Opportunities for Diagnosis
  • Q&A and Closing Remarks

Learning Objectives
Upon successful completion of this activity, participants should be better able to:
  • Recognize ASMD as a potential etiology for hepatosplenomegaly and other hepatic/gastroenterologic manifestations
  • Identify multisystem clinical manifestations that are suggestive of ASMD
  • Apply diagnostic algorithms and appropriate assays to rule out confounding diagnoses and make a differential diagnosis of ASMD
  • Evaluate the efficacy and safety of ERT for pediatric and adult patients with ASMD
  • Implement strategies to optimize multidisciplinary, individualized management of ASMD, considering the use of ERT and supportive care
