Be Careful: Personal Safety for case managers

Speakers:
Margie Gale, MSN, RN, CEAP
Sondra Blount, BSN, RN

Description and CE Information:
Violence is a common workplace hazard for healthcare workers. Case managers, as front-line healthcare providers, are often exposed to workplace violence. According to Bureau of Labor Statistics data, the rate of workplace violence-related nonfatal occupational injuries and illnesses involving days away from work for healthcare and social assistance workers was 15.1 per 10,000 full-time workers in 2012. This is almost 4 times the national average for private industry (4.0 overall). The threat of violence impacts on case managers both professionally and privately. The need for personal safety information is imperative to protect case managers and provide preventive strategies to enable them to provide safe, effective client interventions to meet their
clients’ needs. Behavior health is now recognized as a primary need for all patients in all clinical settings. This differs from though overlaps with clinical psychiatry education nurses have had in their basic program. Additional knowledge, skills and practice are needed to understand and manage the disruptive behavior nurses encounter in all areas of nursing practice today.

Learning Outcomes:

  1. Develop situational awareness and identify two environmental threats in the healthcare setting
  2. List two basic de-escalation techniques to use with disruptive behavior
  3. Identify two self-protection strategies or resources in the workplace
