Interdisciplinary Bedside Rounds: State of the Art

Interdisciplinary care rounds are moving front and center as a key strategy for coordinating care, managing length of stay and improving patient and family satisfaction as well as being a component of the Joint Commission’s Safety Standards. Case managers play a key role in these rounds as either leaders or participants in the process. This session will identify the key stakeholders needed for effective interdisciplinary rounds, and review the best practice rounding processes including scripting and time management.

Learning Outcomes:

  • List the Joint Commission’s Patient Safety Goals.
  • Differentiate between rounds and other modalities such as huddles, change of shift and teaching rounds.
  • Discuss walking rounds versus other rounds formats.
  • Identify key members for the walking rounds team.
  • Describe the structural components of walking rounds.
  • Identify the roles of each member of the interdisciplinary care team.
  • Review a walking rounds check-list.
