In this course, Scott Rae, MA, ThM, PhD discusses the right of physicians to exercise their right of conscience in two primary areas related to conflicts of conscience—the debate over the right to opt out of performing a procedure to which there are moral conflicts, and the debate over the obligation to provide a referral in cases in which they opt out of the procedure.

List of Learning Objectives:
  • Identify the primary moral issues at stake when conflicts of conscience occur in medicine.
  • Evaluate the available options for physicians in handling conflicts of conscience.
  • Debate whether physicians have a moral obligation to refer in cases they have a moral or religious objection to and have opted out of.
