As health care professionals we live by a code of conduct and ethics that charge us to be beneficence and non-maleficence. This code also provides guidelines for personal and professional boundaries. These boundary lines can be blurred by engagement in social media, dual relationships, questionable interactions, and other behaviors that compromise the dynamics of the doctor-patient relationship. As we look to be interactive with our patients and provide services that demonstrate we care, clinicians must be careful not to cross the line of ethical behavior. To preserve the integrity of our interaction we must ensure that we are client focused and not unintentionally or otherwise self-serving.

List of Learning Objectives:
  • Define boundaries and the psychological impact they have on patients and practitioners.
  • Discuss the controversy about the types of relationship interactions, practices and behaviors that are acceptable versus those that cross boundary lines.
  • List the Risk factors and personal challenges that put practitioners at risk for boundary compromise and or violation.
  • Outline some strategies to minimize the risk of a boundary violation.
