Adults with special needs conditions can face many challenges including but not limited to managing their conditions, accessing care, and maintaining optimal health. Physicians and dentists are an integral part of the adult with special needs care team. Research has shown there is a connection between overall health and oral health. Understanding this link and realizing that there can be breakdowns in this connection for adults with special needs conditions is imperative. There exist barriers to accessing care for adults with special needs conditions and recognizing the need for access and being familiar with models to provide treatment will serve the physician and dentist well in caring for adults with special needs conditions.

List of Learning Objectives:
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the link between overall health and oral health and how adults with special needs conditions are more susceptible to experiencing breaks in the link.
  • Describe components of a functional model to successfully treat adults with special needs conditions.
  • Discuss the continued need for oral health access in the adult special needs community.
  • Identify the role physicians can play to help meet the needs of the adult special needs community.
