This two-part course will cover the mechanisms of selective progesterone receptor modulators and consider the implications of de-medicalization of elective abortion.

Part One: Mechanisms and Medical Risks
The advent of selective progesterone receptor modulators used to terminate a pregnancy has changed the face of elective abortion. Understanding the mechanism of action of these drugs, the current FDA regulations and the impending de-medicalization of these drugs is important for clinicians with patients who are reproductive age females.

Part Two: What Does this Mean for Our Practice?
Dr. Donna Harrison and several other experts in the field will continue the discussion on the implications of de-medicalization of elective abortion.

List of Learning Objectives:
  • Describe the mechanism of action of selective progesterone receptor modulators on the pregnant reproductive system.
  • State the evolution of the use of these drugs from FDA approval to current regulations and future directions.
  • Cite the probable complications and adverse events from using selective progesterone receptor modulators based on the mechanism of action, and current and anticipated use.
  • List the reasons for the lack of ability to regulate use of progesterone receptor modulators.
  • Describe the legal and medical ramifications of OTC access of progesterone receptor modulators.
  • Educate patients about the risks of do-it-yourself abortions.
