This course will examine current trends in federal, state, and local law concerning the conscience rights of medical professionals. It will provide a substantive update on key federal litigation concerning conscience rights as applied to the Affordable Care Act, and it will examine how a proliferation of state and local laws addressing sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI) affect medical conscience rights. The presentation will also provide guidance on handling demands from employers, hospitals, or governments to provide medical services to which one may have a moral or religious objection.

  • Discuss federal conscience rights vis-à-vis the Affordable Care Act.
  • Identify trends in state and local laws that affect conscience rights.
  • Articulate conscience rights in accordance with current legal protections.
  • Describe how to proceed if conscience rights are threatened.
