Medical Principlism is a decision-making approach to ethical problems arising in medical practice, using four widely accepted principles: beneficence, non-maleficence, distributive justice, and autonomy. The first three of these principles date back to the ancient physician Hippocrates (c. 400 B.C.), based on an ancient oath of medical practice. Despite their pagan origin, the ideas were readily adapted into the healthcare during the Christian era and have become normative features of medical ethics for over two millennia. Recent centuries have seen the emergence of autonomy as a key additional ethical feature.

List of Learning Objectives:
  • Summarize the key features of medical principlism as an ethical framework.
  • Incorporate these concepts in everyday clinical practice.
  • Avoid the shortcomings of principlism while promoting spiritual values with patients.
