Moral injury and moral distress complicate the psychological impact of medical responders to traumatic and high threat situations. The first part of the presentation explains the psychological concepts of burnout, compassion fatigue, vicarious traumatization, and post-traumatic stress disorder, explaining the origins and degree of validity of these concepts and their relevance to those who respond to disasters or medical catastrophes (such as the Covid-19 pandemic). The second part of the talk introduces the concept of resilience, explains the relevance of the concept of resilience to the Christian ideas of fortitude and endurance, and discusses how Christian resilience practices, such as praying the Psalms, can enhance recovery from extended periods of distress related to charitable service.

List of Learning Objectives:
  • Identify three common psychological responses to chronic stress among health care workers, including: burnout, compassion fatigue, vicarious traumatization.
  • Define the concept of moral injury and explain how moral injury negatively impacts the recovery from traumatic events.
  • Name five psychological factors that characterize resilient individuals.
