Dentistry is a wonderful component to include as part of a medical mission team, especially in light of the prevalence of dental decay and periodontal disease in developing countries. However, providing excellent dental care internationally is a more complicated process than other forms of primary care. Substantial equipment, supplies and instruments are required, and because of the invasive nature of treatment, sterilization protocols must be stringent and followed carefully to prevent cross-contamination. How can a GHO team adequately address the unique needs of their dental component in a way that will best meet the needs of both the patients and their caregivers? This presentation will include a panel of dentists who will share their experiences on the dental mission field, along with significant time for questions from GHO team leaders.

List of Learning Objectives:
  • Describe the pre-trip preparation that must occur with regard to dental treatment.
  • Identify the need for meticulous sterilization processes during treatment.
  • Discuss how to maximize the efficiency of the dental team so they can treat as many patients as possible.
  • Identify the best approaches to patient management, especially when those desiring treatment are more numerous than can be treated by the available personnel.
