Breastfeeding has many known maternal and pediatric benefits, and physicians who have the potential to interact with one or both of the breastfeeding dyads should have tools to be able to support them. Medical school often has limited, if any, education on this subject. Mothers are often told to “pump and dump” in non-evidence-based situations due to lack of knowledge or resources. This presentation will discuss common breastfeeding issues and potential solutions for physicians in multiple different settings. We will briefly review breast physiology as well as a review of maternal and pediatric benefits to breastfeeding. We will also discuss maternal medications, medical conditions, and their compatibility with breastfeeding. Finally, we will discuss resources that can be beneficial for reference to clinicians taking care of breastfeeding dyads.
