Access to healthcare and healthcare delivery has become a major issue in our country over the last several decades. Healthcare disparities caused by many factors have led many communities, organizations, churches, and legislators to seek ways to improve access to medical care in many ways. Instruments have been developed that directly ask patients what barriers they see as limiting their ability to get care and to follow their doctor’s recommendations. In this workshop we will look at some of the instruments used to assess patients’ needs. We will also look at some of the ways these different groups have sought to close come of the gaps in access to care. This will include a brief look at some of the ways groups like the National Organization of Free and Charitable Clinics, Christian Community Healthcare Fellowship and other national groups are providing networks that share ideas and expertise as they seek to provide care for uninsured, underinsured and others who cannot otherwise get medical care. Finally, we will look at the experience and growth of the Tomagwa Healthcare Clinic as an example of one community’s commitment to meet these needs.

List of Learning Objectives:
  • Define access to care.
  • List some of the instruments (patient questionnaires) used to assess access to healthcare.
  • Discuss several models and types of clinics that provide charity and low-cost healthcare.
  • List some of the national organizations that are partnering to assist clinics.
  • Describe how several churches in one community organized to create and grow a local clinic to serve the needs of their community.
