Caring for patients necessitates an understanding of the lop-sided relationship—think hospital gown or dental chair vs. a white coat—between patient and medical or dental professional. While ethical lines can often be clearly drawn, what about moral circles? That is, how can viewing the “vulnerable other” as “one of us” improve and enhance our care, our institutions, and our communities? Building upon the work of, inter alia, Ramsey, Pellegrino, and May, this lecture looks at how we care for, communicate with, and comfort while treating patients, human beings who are our “neighbors”. A consideration of virtue ethics, accompanied by patient and physician narratives, will be included in the presentation.

List of Learning Objectives:
  • Evaluate our lives and practice: Is the patient before me a “who” or a “what”
  • Identify my own moral circle drawing: who is in, and who is outside?
  • Discus the role of community in your practice/life.
