** This session
earns SW, RN, and CCM ** Helping patients to manage pain and the associated mental, physical and social impact poses a challenging task for case managers. Being familiar with a patient diagnosis and staying up to date on the available treatment options can help to make coordinating care for these patients less daunting. Advancements in nerve surgery principles and microsurgical techniques can be used to provide long term surgical treatment options for a number of painful injuries. This lecture will discuss how nerve surgery can be used to relieve pain, allowing patients to restore physical function and resume everyday activities. During this lecture, we will discuss nerve related joint pain-a condition affecting millions of Americans. We will review the anatomy of the nerves supplying sensation to the joints and discuss how nerve injuries may result from traumatic injuries and surgical procedures. We will also explain how neuropathic pain is diagnosed and describe how minimally invasive nerve surgery known as Joint Denervation surgery, can be performed to provide long term pain relief. At the conclusion of this lecture, case managers will be equipped with a new tool to consider when coordinating care for patients severely impacted by pain, nerve surgery. OBJECTIVES:
