Artificial intelligence is no longer a distant possibility for case management—it's already reshaping how case managers identify risk, coordinate care, and manage documentation. But as predictive analytics and automated workflows become embedded in daily practice, the profession faces a more pressing question than whether to adopt AI: how to integrate it without losing the clinical judgment, patient advocacy, and equity that define case management.
This course connects emerging AI trends in healthcare to the realities of everyday case management practice, offering a grounded and thought-provoking look at what these tools can—and cannot—do. Participants will examine AI's growing role in care coordination, explore its value as a decision-support tool rather than a decision-making authority, and identify the key guardrails needed to keep clinical judgment, advocacy, and equity at the center of care. Through real clinical examples, ethical dilemmas, and interactive polling, learners will reflect on the human expertise that AI can enhance but never replace.
By course end, participants will be equipped to engage AI thoughtfully and critically—leveraging its efficiencies while reinforcing the compassion, ethical reasoning, and patient-centered advocacy that remain the heart of case management.
- Describe current and emerging applications of artificial intelligence in case management practice, including risk stratification, care gap identification, and documentation automation.
- Differentiate between AI’s role as a decision-support tool and the case manager’s role as the accountable decision-maker in patient care.
- Identify at least three guardrails necessary to preserve clinical judgment, patient advocacy, and equity when integrating AI into case management workflows.
- Analyze real clinical scenarios to evaluate where AI-generated recommendations align—or conflict—with patient context, preferences, and psychosocial complexity.
