The Evolving Knowledge Base of Professional Case Management: Introducing the New CMSA Core Curriculum

No Ratings

Case management continues to evolve in response to increasingly complex health and human service environments, changing reimbursement and regulatory expectations, advances in technology, workforce transformation, and the growing emphasis on value, quality, equity, and person-centered outcomes. As the knowledge and competencies required of professional case managers expand, the foundational resources that guide case management education and practice must evolve as well.

This presentation explores the newly updated CMSA Core Curriculum for Professional Case Management, highlighting important developments in the knowledge, concepts, and competencies that support contemporary case management practice. Drawing upon the revised curriculum, the presentation will examine how the role of the professional case manager is changing and how established foundations of case management, such as care coordination, interprofessional collaboration, advocacy, resource management, transitions of care, ethics, and value-based care, are being strengthened by emerging priorities across continuum of health and human services. Attention will be given to contemporary forces influencing the case management industry and the increasing importance of evidence-based and outcomes-oriented practice.

The presentation will consider the implications of key developments for case manager competency, professional development, leadership, and lifelong learning. Rather than viewing the updated Core Curriculum solely as a body of knowledge to be mastered, participants will be encouraged to consider it as a framework for advancing the science and practice of case management. The session will challenge professional case managers to examine how emerging knowledge can be translated into everyday practice while preserving the enduring commitments of case management to advocacy, coordination, professional accountability, value-based and person-centered care.

  1. Identify key contemporary and emerging knowledge areas of professional case management practice.
  2. Examine how key trends in healthcare delivery are influencing the competencies and responsibilities of today’s professional case manager.
  3. Apply concepts from the updated Core Curriculum to strengthen evidence-based, person-centered, outcomes-focused case management practice.
