Originally presented at 2021 Annual Conference

34 States plus the District of Columbia have legalized Cannabis for medical purposes. However, many healthcare Practitioners are not taught about how cannabis can provide medicinal benefits to the clients they serve. Additionally, many Organizations have not updated their operational policies and procedures with respect to Medical Cannabis to stay in alignment with rapidly changing and evolving laws. These issues can present Case Managers with unique ethical challenges and dilemmas when it comes to ensuring their clients receive the most appropriate treatment options.

This workshop will review the basics of Cannabis Therapeutics, provide an overview of the Professional Code of Conduct and contemplate ethical dilemma's Case Managers may face when State law is in conflict with Federal Law and how they can best advocate for their clients who are interested in using a natural alternative to more traditional treatment options.

OBJECTIVES:
  1. Identify and learn conditions for which medical cannabis can be beneficial.
  2. Discuss the ethical challenges case managers face in meeting the needs of their clients and upholding the Code of Professional Conduct.
  3. Discuss issues impacting practice in light of the current era where policy has rapidly shifted toward the legalization of cannabis.
