Health
policy has become entrenched in popular culture – with companies and
celebrities increasingly and publicly weighing in on important issues related
to health and society. But what role should healthcare providers play in
educating policymakers and advocating for policies that impact
healthcare? Now, more than ever, it is
imperative that the healthcare provider take on the role of advocate. The
advocacy need is not necessarily confined to a single client/patient or
population but rather an overarching advocacy for the needs of all to achieve
health equity, decrease health disparities and create an environment where
all people can flourish. Health policy
runs the gamut of issues; from social justice, health disparity issues to
treatment concepts like medical marijuana and euthanasia to regulatory
issues, licensure compacts, and everything in between. Who better to advocate
for healthcare and our patients/clients than the people who understand both
sides? This presentation will review
the importance of the healthcare provider in public policy, examine the
impact and importance of being involved in public policy development and
discover action items that every healthcare provider can take to be informed
and involved. OBJECTIVES:
