How Rating Systems Have Reinvigorated Spec Writing

Overview

Selecting products and writing specifications that support a project's sustainability goals can be a daunting task with the variety of third-party rating systems and the current landscape of material transparency. Also challenging is the ability to get younger staff engaged in the written specifications process. However, there is a huge opportunity to enhance the professional growth of staff when specifications are used as a tool for teaching about sustainability, about coordinating key product criteria, and as an enforcement guide during construction administration to track supplied materials. Participants will learn how using specifications as a tool pays off project after project for LEED v4.1 rating system product selection, fosters steps toward sustainable market transformation, and guides a new generation of staff to garner a respect for specs.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this session, participants will be able to:
  • Define the common sustainable material selection process for rating systems
  • Describe how sustainability criteria can guide product selections and elevate product performance criteria
  • Integrate sustainable material contributions into construction administration activities to uphold the intent of the sustainable attributes specified
  • Summarize the environmental benefits tallied for rating system compliance to re-inform future specifications and product selections
