People Who Write Specifications: Training and Transitions

Overview

Over the last decade or so there has been a trend of moving away from dedicated, expert specification writers who work directly for or as consultants to AE firms. More responsibility for specifications is shifting to the AE design teams: project architects, project engineers, interior designers, and others. Training and supporting these team members is critical to managing the quality of construction documents and professional liability. We will look at academic programs, in-house training, and professional programs such as CSI CDT®. We will also look at the existing platforms for specifications and their benefits and challenges for training.
