About This Program

According to the IBC, “…Construction documents shall be of sufficient clarity to indicate the location, nature and extent of the work proposed and show in detail that it will conform to the provisions of this code…as determined by the building official.” Failure to properly to do so can jeopardize life safety and property and result in serious liability. This course is intended to provide architects and specifiers of firestop products and systems with the information and resources they need to meet the intent of the code.

    Keith Sanford is a Senior Field Engineer with Specified Technologies Inc. (STI) who works primarily with design professionals to make the specification of firestopping easier and code-compliant and reduce clients’ liability through education and consulting. Keith is a PE (Professional Engineer) who believes in the importance of firestopping, a belief that solidified after a personal experience during the legal aftermath of a major fire. For over 30 years, he has worked for two of the largest firestop manufacturers in the world, both domestically and abroad, in positions including sales, field engineer, technical service manager, product manager, global marketing manager, and director of business development. These roles took him throughout the US and Canada, Europe, Australia, the Middle East, India, and the Pacific Rim. Keith holds a degree in Civil Engineering from Valparaiso University and an MBA from the Meinders School of Business at Oklahoma City University. He was a founding member of IFC (International Firestop Council) and served 2 years as President. He is a member of CSI and achieved both CDT and CCPR certifications.

  • John Zalepka

    John is the Senior Manager of Engagement and Programs at Specified Technologies Inc. and is responsible for the accreditation and maintenance of all CE trainings, including the widely specified Firestop Instructional Training and all AIA modules. Previously as a Territory Manager, he worked in the trenches alongside contractors and brings this real-world experience into the classroom. John is also a professional keynote speaker, member of the National Speakers Association and internationally recognized as a Distinguished Toastmaster.
