Regulated Waste Handling

The regulation of solid and hazardous wastes is a highly prescriptive maze of technical requirements. Those requirements can change with the specific type of waste, the rate and amount of waste generated, and the state where your operations are located. This course helps business managers and operators become familiar with proper waste management and emergency procedures for hazardous wastes and other regulated wastes. It also includes information on the resources required to support proper waste management.

Through this course, you'll understand the definitions and classification of solid and hazardous wastes, federal requirements for generators of hazardous wastes, including those around employee training, administrative requirements (like notification, EPA ID number, and re-notification), accumulation of wastes in containers (including satellite and central accumulation points) or tanks, inspections, and recordkeeping. You will also learn about emergency preparedness and prevention; emergency response procedures for spills, fires, explosions, or other releases involving hazardous wastes; and the overlap with OSHA emergency action and response requirements. It will include details on procedures for shipping hazardous wastes offsite, including container selection, marking, labeling, placarding and loading; the hazardous waste manifest and exception and discrepancy reporting; land disposal restrictions and how treatment standards apply to a hazardous wastes; selection of transporters and treatment, storage, and disposal facilities for off-site management of hazardous wastes; and Department of Transportation Hazardous Materials requirements. You will gain knowledge other regulated wastes, including special requirements for universal wastes, used oil, recyclable materials, and excluded materials, along with strategies for reducing the regulatory burden and risks of regulated wastes, like waste minimization; exclusions, exemptions, and thresholds; and episodic waste generation.
