Electrical Safety

Alcohol processing facilities consist of specialized equipment within which liquids, dust, or vapors may be continuously processed in large quantities, sometimes at elevated temperatures and pressures. Both chemical and physical changes occur in these materials, and during “abnormal” conditions, the composition and properties may change drastically. These conditions, together with considerations of operating continuity, dictate electrical standards of design for distilled spirits plants that are not warranted in other industries. This course provides a detailed overview of the electrical risks associated with distilled spirits plants and tips on how to best safeguard your operations. It will walk you through the appropriate electrical area classifications for the various buildings and processes found in spirits operations, address risk factors to monitor during production, and share best practices based on the panelists' expertise.

Learning Outcomes:
1. Understand the National Electrical Code area classifications in relation to distilled spirits buildings or processes
2. Learn how to identify and mitigate the specific electrical risks present in distilled spirits plants, such as static electricity, dust, vapors, and lightning protection
3. Determine how to analyze their facilities and select or utilize equipment appropriate for these areas
