A properly managed intellectual property portfolio can help a company to protect its core business and research and development activities, boost market competitiveness, and add great value to a company’s bottom line by creating intangible assets that can be licensed and sold. This course gives participants an overview of the different types of intellectual property, best practices for securing and maintaining intellectual property protection in the alcohol industry, and industry-specific strategies for protecting against counterfeiters and infringers in the global market.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Learn how to identify possible subjects of intellectual property within a company’s business activities;
2. Gain an understanding of pitfalls to avoid when attempting to protect alcohol-related intellectual property, and strategies for establishing an intellectual property portfolio that strengthens a company’s market position; and
3. Evaluate options for policing intellectual property rights at home and abroad, and identify strategies for defending against infringers and counterfeiters.

    Zareefa Burki Flener is the founder and managing partner at Flener IP & Business Law, a women-owned and WBE-Certified IP and business/corporate law firm. Ms Flener, is registered with the USPTO, and has more than two decades of experience managing international and domestic patent and trademark portfolios in a wide range of areas. Zareefa is well regarded by clients and peers worldwide, is included in the IAM Patent 1000 and is recognized by Managing Intellectual Property as an “IP Star” and one of the “Top 250 Women in IP”. She has also been recognized by High Times magazine as a “Leader in Cannabis Law”.

    Before becoming an attorney, Ms Flener received her MSc from Loyola University of Chicago with distinction. Her scientific research and experience span 10 years and are in two particularly highly publicized areas: HIV transmission and pathology, and mapping of the human genome. She also obtained her MSc with high distinction. Ms Flener is well published in the field of HIV pathology in such journals as the American Journal of Pathology, Clinical Immunology and the Journal of Clinical Investigation. While her science background is useful in understanding inventions related to the plant chemistry, and biotech, her business acumen and holistic approach to a company’s business goals have led to successfully achieving and maintaining market dominance for clients. For instance, a client was awarded the TIME.com Invention of the Year Award and another has been recognized by FAST Company as one of the most innovative companies.

    She continues to manage the firm, IP portfolios (from Fortune 500 companies to solo inventors and universities), while also contributing to public IP know-how through participation in panels and publications. Ms Flener is a member of Forbes Business Counsel, the American Intellectual Property Law Association, the International Association for the Protection of Intellectual Property, INTA, the American Bar Association and the Chicago Bar Association. When not working, Ms Flener can be found on a golf course, spending time with family and when permitted, travelling.

  • Lisa Harkins

    Lisa has over a decade of experience managing international and domestic trademark and copyright portfolios for clients ranging from small business owners to multinational corporations. She enjoys counseling clients on all stages of copyright and trademark prosecution, advising on branding strategies, and resolving trademark-related disputes for clients in a variety of industries in the TTAB and in Federal and State courts.
    Lisa received her law degree from Pepperdine University School of Law, where she also earned a certificate in Intellectual Property from the Palmer Center for Entrepreneurship and the Law and the CALI Excellence for the Future Award in Trademarks. She graduated with honors from the University of Notre Dame, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science and French. These academic pursuits also led Lisa to complete the year-long Programme International at L’institut d’Etudes Politiques in Paris (Sciences-Po).
    Lisa was named to the 2021 Illinois Super Lawyers Rising Stars List. Outside of the office, Lisa enjoys spending time with her family and volunteering as a guardian ad litem for children in foster care.
