Session 124: Providing EMDR to Transgender Gender Diverse (TGD) Clients

Thank you

Danielle Godfrey, a transgender woman, trauma therapist, certified in EMDR and an EMDRIA Consultant In Training will provide participants with an introduction to the wide diversity of Transgender and Gender Diverse (TGD) seeking EMDR treatment. Historical treatment approaches for TGD clients often employed practices that were non affirming sand often traumatizing to TGD people. Recent research has led to an increase in affirming treatment approaches which promote positive mental health and provide effective treatment for TGD people. Danielle will draw upon current research, personal lived and clinical experience to discuss and apply concepts presented in the implementation of affirming EMDR treatment of Transgender and Gender Diverse (TGD) by TGD and TGD allied clinicians. Danielle utilizes lecture, videos, discussion, and experiential exercises in this presentation.

  1. Participants will be able to describe/ unique characteristics of Transgender, Non binary and Gender Non-conforming Peoples and their wide diversity of characteristics and needs.
  2. Participants will be able to describe/list elements of non affirming and affirming transgender care, describe and list risk and protective factors for suicidal behaviors in adolescent and adult TGD clients, and the mental health needs of TGD people including risk and protective factors in relation to suicidal behaviors.
  3. Participants will be able to identify/list all modifications to Shapiro's eight phase protocols in providing EMDR treatment to Transgender, NB and GNC utilizing elements of the principles of Sand Chang's approach and the Greenwald Fairy Tale Model.
