Sowing Horticultural Therapy (HT) into schools reaps therapeutic benefits for adult participants and the community. If you’re wondering if taking on a school garden is right for your school, come learn about evidence-based practices with therapeutic applications for all students. We will explore the potential to serve adult and community participants through school and community gardening programs. Successful school and community gardening methods for Oklahoma, including indoor gardening, container gardening, and raised bed gardening will be covered.

Objectives:
1: Learners will understand the therapeutic benefits of school gardening.
2: Learners will understand the therapeutic applications for adult participants in school and community gardening.
3: Learners will be introduced to successful school and community gardening methods for Oklahoma.

    It was at OSU-OKC in 2002 that Annie took her first Horticultural Therapy class and started working on a way to combine her love of science, art, nature, and people. She obtained her AS working in the campus greenhouse with the developmentally disabled and fell in love with HT, going on to intern in D.C. at the Smithsonian Botanical Garden and American Horticultural Society specializing in HT with children. Her B.S. is in Public Horticulture at OSU Stillwater, and M.S. from K-State in Human Issues in Horticulture. Since graduating in 2010, Annie has been a Horticultural Therapist at Jim Thorpe Rehabilitation and Horticulture Extension Educator for OSU Cooperative Extension and consulted on dozens of HT projects as co-founder of Horticultural Therapy of Oklahoma. She now works for United Way of Central Oklahoma and Heartline in Oklahoma City.
