About the Speaker: Dr. Kristen Berlin is a Physician Advisor for BayCare Health System. Prior to reinventing herself as a Utilization Management Physician, she practiced medicine as a Pediatric Hospitalist for 20 years at Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital and Saint Joseph's Children's Hospital in the Tampa Bay area.

She currently works with system-based denials management and PA-led real-time observation management. She is the champion for skin failure across her hospital system, providing documentation guidance and education. She is the Pediatric Medical Director for Suncoast Hospice/Empath and the Medical Director for the Southwest Region of the Florida Department of Juvenile Justice.

Dr. Berlin is currently pursuing her MBA in Healthcare Administration. When she is not working or studying, she is globe-trotting with her teenagers and volunteering with rhinos at the 01 Pejeta Conservancy in Kenya. She is a self-declared "Peloton Addict" and cycling enthusiast who loves spending time with her schnauzer and her 2 free-hopping bunnies.

Program Overview:
This one-hour webinar meets the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) recommended content related to the prevention, recognition, and care of people with substance use disorders including those with concurrent pain and/or psychiatric and medical co-morbidities.

The United States faces a crisis of deaths from opioids, stimulants, synthetic agents, tobacco and alcohol. These deaths represent a mere fraction of the total number of Americans harmed by substance misuse, and many people suffer daily from chronic use disorders. The long-term effects of substance misuse impact individuals, families, and communities. This is further compounded by changing patterns of substance misuse, as well as an increasing incidence of polysubstance use. The rise in fentanyl use or exposure, concurrent substance misuse, as well as overdose deaths, necessitates consideration of educational elements that promote understanding of SUDs, as well as their identification, treatment, and management.

Federal and state policy over the last decade has sought to overcome the long-term effects of substance misuse impacting individuals, families, communities, and those charged with resource allocation. Section 1263 of the ‘Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2023’ otherwise known as the Medication Access and Training Expansion (MATE) Act, requires new or renewing Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) registrants, as of June 27, 2023, to have completed a total of at least 8 hours of training on opioid or other substance use disorders.

Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of this activity, learners will be able to:

• Identify characteristics of Electronic Nicotine Delivery System (E-Cigarette) Use
• List the use and dangers of synthetic cannabinoids
• Identify the dangers of new drugs of abuse, including hidden Fentanyl
• Describe public health concerns/prevention of new drugs of abuse
• Define family physician’s role as health care professionals

• Watch and listen to the 1-hour webinar in full until completed.
• Reflect on the current and best practices discussed and how the information may change your own current practices.
• Use the practice cases to challenge your understanding of substance use disorders or clinical practice guidelines.
• Complete the CME Activity Evaluation at the end of the webinar.
• Your CME certificate will be emailed and will be available for printing after you have submitted the activity evaluation. Please keep your certificates for your records and for your DEA and/or state re-licensure requirements. Do not send certificate copies to the FAFP or the AAFP offices.
• CME credits earned from this activity will be reported to AAFP and CE Broker within 30 days, provided you have completed and successfully submitted the evaluation.
