Ethics, Public Records & Sunshine Law
ALL Florida county commissioners are required by Florida Statutes to complete 4-hours of ethics training each calendar year. This program ensures commissioners meet legal requirements and gain essential knowledge to govern responsibly. Participants leave with a deeper understanding of ethics expectations, Sunshine Law and Public Records Law, reporting requirements, and become familiar with the process of an ethics complaint.
The 4-hour session includes:
- Two hours dedicated to Florida Ethics Law, covering the Code of Ethics for Public Officers and Employees, gift prohibitions, conflict-of-interest rules, financial disclosure obligations, and the ethics complaint process.
- One hour on the Sunshine Law, highlighting Florida’s Government in the Sunshine Law, including open meeting requirements, communication restrictions, and enforcement procedures.
- One hour on Public Records Law, focused on the Florida Public Records Act, detailing public access rights, recordkeeping responsibilities, exemptions, and response protocols.
