The Safe Food for Canadians Regulations – A Regulatory Overview

In January of 2019, Canada’s Safe Food for Canadian Regulations (SFCR) came into force, prompting significant changes to food regulatory oversight and enforcement in the Canadian retail marketplace. Finalized in 2018, the SFCR are the result of broad food regulatory modernization initiatives by the Canadian government. These newly approved Regulations will enforce the Safe Food for Canadians Act (SFCA) of 2012. The SFCA and SFCR are the result of streamlining of Canada’s approach to food safety measures, and represent a simplified and consolidated version 14 sets of Canadian food regulations and four food-related statutes.
