In
January of 2019, Canada’s Safe Food for
Canadian Regulations (SFCR) came into force, prompting significant changes
to food regulatory oversight and enforcement in the Canadian retail
marketplace. Finalized in 2018, the SFCR
are the result of broad food regulatory modernization initiatives by the
Canadian government. These newly
approved Regulations will enforce the
Safe Food for Canadians Act (SFCA) of
2012. The SFCA and SFCR are the result
of streamlining of Canada’s approach to food safety measures, and represent a simplified
and consolidated version 14 sets of Canadian food regulations and four food-related
statutes.
